Not that there aren’t a few disappointments in the presentation; there is no chapter with deleted scenes (although a few moments are shown that never made it into the finished film…a diminutive girl, seeing Batman, asks, in all seriousness, “Is it Halloween? “, which causes him to end, and grin) ; the ‘History’ of Batman, despite a wealth of photos and clips from the comics, serials, and graphic novels, does not offer a single visual from the campy 60s TV series (whether this was a refusal by 20th Century Fox, who produced the series, to permit their utilize, or an attempt to distance the movie from the “ZAP! BAM! POW!” silliness is not explained) . Also, the brief appearance of shroud chronicle Jack Palance, as ‘Boss Grissom’, is largely ignored, other than in Tim Burton’s audio commentary, which is surprising. Although the movie’s sensuality wouldn’t raise an eyebrow nowadays, it’s easy to gaze how audiences from the 50’s would have been affected by Brigitte Bardot’s sensuous invent and how this movie revolutionized the foreign film market. A genuine delight to gawk, wild-child Brigitte teases with her bouncy sprint and her tight sweaters. And, yes, she can even act! In the role of Juliette, an incredibly gorgeous orphaned young woman living in a seaside village, Brigitte keeps the splendid balance between the constant flirt (who’s misunderstood as being the loosest girl in town) and the woman who yearns to have a “normal” married life despite her attraction to her brother-in-law. Contrary to common thought and despite Juliette’s regrettable infidelity, there’s really no sex in this movie, unless you reflect a one-time tush shot to be overly sexual. The DVD booklet mentions how some audiences originally misperceived this film’s sexuality to be so fearless that rampant gossip soon generated complaints about scenes that weren’t even in the movie! The cinematography is breathtaking, with the Riviera beckoning you to go there…or at least visit for an extended period of time. The only aspect of the movie that is dated and very powerful out-of-sync with new times is the attitude that men are good to women and that, with first-rate discipline and control, women can be kept in line and “forced” to cherish their husbands.

The Criterion edition is, as always, astonishing. With director Vadim’s approval prior to his passing away, the movie was restored to its fresh uncut version in a glorious widescreen format. The digital tranfer is impressive and one of the extras on the disc illustrates the clean-up process and provides before-and-after comparisons. The colors are now dauntless and vibrant, and the print is crisp and distinct. Superior restoration and clean-up! The unusual US theatrical trailer is included and is hilarious as it makes the movie seem so cheap, sleazy and lurid.

Now here comes the downer: this movie deserves better English subtitles and infinitely better English dubbing. If you’re trying to learn French, you don’t want to do it with these subtitles. I found them to be quite improper during a few scenes and, with no rapid-fire dialog in this film to explain it, not as broad as they should have been. These inaccuracies don’t detract from the legend as a whole, but given that this is a Criterion release, I feel more attention should have been paid to this aspect of the film. As far as the dubbing is concerned, don’t even bother. After a shrimp or so of listening to the dubbed version, it’s apparent why the dubbed feature isn’t listed on the DVD case. The actors’ readings are flat and boring. Criterion has proved repeatedly they can do distinguished better than that, so what happened here?

I quiet give the movie itself 5 stars for it is an engaging time capsule into 50’s psychology, and it’s a great record as well. And how can you not give 5 stars to Brigitte Bardot! I did subtract one star for the quite contemptible subtitles. Composed, for around $20, you can come by a fun romp with Brigitte in the Riviera of the 1950’s. Sounds favorable to me. Worth owning.

After having seen so many movies during the last 25 years, I’m beginning to understand two or three things about cinema. For example, it’s impossible to profess a passion for cinema if the movies you contemplate are only masterpieces. Occupy me or not, but I’m not able to explore three Fellini or Bergman’s movies in a row without feeling a bit bored. I MUST cold down and refresh my neurones by watching a unpleasant sci-fi movie or a John Wayne movie of the 50’s ( he starred in a lot of very cheap films…) .

Director Roger Vadim’s AND GOD CREATED WOMAN is, in my plan, one of these movies you cannot neglect if you truly care for cinema. Not because Roger Vadim is an unknown genius but because of the actress who plays the main character : Brigitte Bardot. You simply have to beget one of her movies in your library and since only three or four movies starring BB have passed with success the test of time, AND GOD CREATED WOMAN could be your first choice.

But remember that Roger Vadim was not Billy Wilder and that the french Marilyn Monroe had to count solely on her sex-appeal to attract the audience. And it collected works. Brigitte Bardot shot a lot of abominable movies, she was not, in my belief, a reliable actress but she ignited the cover. She was a trusty Star. And I’m not ashamed to have this DVD in my library.

Gunfighter Taw Jackson (John Wayne) recruits a motley crew of sidekicks to consume ruthless mine owner, Frank Pierce (Bruce Cabot) . Pierce routinely transports a fortune in gold dust in an armored stagecoach called “The War Wagon.” Complete with a limited army of guards and a Gatling gun, The War Wagon is formidable. Taw figures to decide faded scores by devising a complex idea to buy the gold. John Wayne was well-behaved at titanic budget B pictures. This flick is very different from a John Ford masterpiece, but so what? This movie is a typical Batjac action-adventure flick with humorous overtones. Wayne trades verbal barbs with Lomax (Kirk Douglas), a too-cool hired gun. Howard Keel is Levi Walking Have, a funny and politically wrong Indian. Robert Walker is a drunken explosives expert. Keenan Wynn is a sadistic teamster. They each play a role in the carefully timed execution of the robbery. Unaware of their thieving alliance, Pierce hires Lomax to end Taw, setting up several tense situations. The supporting cast includes members of Wayne’s Batjac production company family. Scrutinize for Bruce Dern, Gene Evans, and Sheb Wooley in exiguous roles. Throw in lustrous outdoor locations, a saloon brawl, lots of hard-riding action, and it’s huge fun for Western movie fans. It’s well worth the designate.

Well, if you’re into double-dipping for DVDs, this RE-PACKAGED/RE-RELEASED downer dvd is for you. Universal did the stout SIN all lawful, they took their fresh dvd release of The War Wagon, and gave us the same non-animorphic release as they did the first time, only with a different packaging so us suckers hoping for a better, cleaner, or at least animorphic widescreen version, would be duped into buying the same thing twice.

If you’ve arrive here, then like myself you care for this gripping pairing of two of Hollywoods greatest leading men, John Wayne and Kirk Douglas. Their on-screen chemistry is perfect in this not-so-buddy Western, where Taw Jackson (Wayne) gets out of prison after serving only 3 years for a crime he was framed for, and gets together a misfit group of men to occupy the man that robbed him of half-a-million in gold. If they can halt The War Wagon.

If you already have the novel white and red colored widescreen release, don’t exhaust your money again on this newly package “Universal Western Collection” release (brown in color) . It is EXACTLY the same print, with the same bad extras as that first release. Some scant production notes, cast and filmakers (again scant) film highlights, theatrical trailor. Exactly the same. I’ll give the extra copy I now gain to a friend of mine who also loves John Wayne. And someday, maybe a safe studio will give The War Wagon the dvd release it deserves-we don’t need 5.1 surround(this was originally a mono-stereo release) ; objective animorphic widescreen with a restored print which does not explain the speckles of age.

Yes, I have heard that “American Outlaws” isn’t always historically good! But you know what? Who cares? It’s a terrific movie, that takes you on a wild and hilarious lag with Jesse James and his gang. All the actors are well-cast and did a gargantuan job portraying their characters, although – in my mind – Colin Farrell (the next expansive thing!) and Ali Larter (Hollywood’s most underrated actress) do stand out among the others! If you are looking for a history lesson – go to the library. But if you are looking for a fun movie with lots of action, a mountainous cast, helpful script, a bit of romance, and some truly unforgettable moments, then don’t miss out on “American Outlaws”!!! It’s become one of my all-time celebrated movies! Plus, the DVD has really mountainous bonus features … trailers, tv spots, photo galleries, DVD Rom features, and 4 expansive featurettes – check out “How to be an Outlaw” for some nice shots of the guys in cowboy camp … showing off their muscles during what would later be know as the hottest summer in Texas’ history )

American Outlaws, one of the first Westerns of the fresh millennium, is an adaptation of the life of legendary 1800s outlaw bank robber Jesse James and his band of men, the James-Yonger Gang.

It’s the anecdote of “tradition vs. progress.” Following the Civil War, James and friends returned home to the farm where the “vast terrible” railroad was trying to expand west by buying out all the farmland from the people in its path. The people of James’ town did not want to go quietly so a expansive war begins between the farmers (with James and friends as their warriors) and the railroad tycoon when the railroad “goons” start to rough up the townsfolk.

Overall, though there are a few historical inaccuracies, the movie is a fun action romp (tons of humor) through the former west with cowboys, LOTS of gun battles, stage coach robberies, reveal robberies, saloons, horses and shapely southern belles.

Watching this again many years after I first saw it, I expected to be disappointed. After all, the spacious films of our youth sometimes turn out to be something less than we had imagined. But Mister Roberts does not disappoint. This is one of the gems of the American cinema, a poignant comedy featuring a multitudinously clever and delectable script by Frank Nugent and Joshua Logan from a new by Thomas Heggen made into a play by Logan and Heggen that ran for many years on Broadway. The movie features kindly performances from Henry Fonda, James Cagney, William Powell and Jack Lemmon. Fonda is particularly sparkling in the kind of role from which legends are made. (He also played the piece on Broadway.) You can occupy all your John Wayne classics and toss them overboard with the Captain’s palm tree. Henry Fonda as Lt (j.g.) Doug Roberts, cargo officer of the USS Reluctant, shines forth as the noblest hero of them all. He is a level-headed, strong, glowing, daring man in a anecdote obvious to mist up your eyes even if you’re watching it for the twentieth time.

Jack Lemmon won a supporting Oscar for his performance as Ensign Pulver, a kind of sluggish, but slyly resourceful Walter Mitty type who talks a stout game but never follows through… James Cagney is the Captain, a sour, resentful man who mercilessly badgers Mister Roberts and grossly neglects the morale of his crew. There are a number of memorable scenes in the film, the kind recalled with delight. My popular involves the crew, their binoculars and the nurses. I also loved the careful concocting of the “scotch whiskey” by Doc. The weekly letters requesting a transfer, the Hoot Gibson films we (thankfully) never discover, the ever worshipful palm tree, Pulver’s marbles in a tobacco tin that he shakes in Roberts’s face, vowing to present his manhood by putting them in the captain’s overbin, his “firecracker,” his “If I could be with you/One hour tonight/To do the things I might/I’m telling you true/I’d be anything but blue,” the giddy nurses, and the evil liberty are other unforgettable bits. But more than anything, what makes this a large movie, are the indelible characters so very lawful to our experience, and how nicely they meld and dissimilarity.

This is, along with From Here to Eternity, Das Boot, The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Caine Mutiny, Stalag 17, and Twelve O’Clock High, among my accepted movies to advance out of World War II. What sets Mister Roberts apart is the humor born of the boredom, frustration, and tedium that most truly characterizes life in the service. In this regard I steal a saying that goes something like this: “War is filled with long stretches of boredom punctuated by moments of absolute dread.” The crew of the Reluctant got only the boredom.

This helpful war comedy/movie will always be one of my personal favorites. Based on the WWII guideline, the basic premise is a rather anal boat captain trying to earn “ship shape” a merchant/transport type ship. (in the Pacific) .

James Cagney (Does his talent ever ruin? One of his best roles)

Lemmon (Ensign Pulver), shows his talent for the state gag and, lets say, driftiness, early. This perfomance spawned a few sequels on Pulver alone.

If you were ever in the Navy, you will view Cagney’s Performance as uncanny, and view a runt bit of each actor in your acquire experience.

This is meant to be seen in its entirety. Its not prick to pieces for TV, and when seen in this format is like a current movie, meant to be seen from initiate to achieve.

Highly recommended, and will be seen again and again

“The Apostle,” starring Robert Duvall, Farrah Fawcett, Miranda Richardson, and John Beasley, is an outstanding film… beautifully written and acted, breathtaking in its simplicity and yet imbued with complex and deeply etched characters, a aesthetic and realistic portrayal of life inside a southern Pentecostal Christian community, and an eloquent sage of one man’s search for redemption.

The movie’s premise is simple and effective. Euliss “Sonny” Dewey (played by Robert Duvall) is a Pentecostal preacher who has everything: a loving wife Jessie (Farrah Fawcett) and two adoring children; a doting mother (June Carter-Cash) ; and a thriving ministry. He is respected and loved by his church community.

But Sonny is also a womanizer, and a man who suspects his wife being alive to in an adulterous relationship of her bear. Jessie is indeed having an affair with Horace, the youth minister in their church. When Sonny discovers the truth about his wife, his life unravels. He is ousted as pastor of his church. One day, Sonny momentarily loses control, and in a drunken rage, smashes Horace’s skull with a baseball bat.

It took Robert Duvall fourteen years to look this project through to fruition, and his commitment shows throughout the film. His performance as “The Apostle E.F.” has grand depth and credibility. “The Apostle” is a well crafted film which explores many issues confronting humanity: first-rate versus evil; justice versus mercy; and virtue versus vice. This movie provides sensitive answers to pressing questions, and does so without ever becoming moralistic or “preachy.” With a top-shelf screenplay and favorable performances by an safe cast, The Apostle is extraordinary entertainment, as well as a movie with an vital message.

It is a honest depiction of people who follow Jesus. We have misgivings, tempers, pride and lusts, yet, when it’s all said and done, we can detached fade on.

There is one segment, when a racist bigot – played handsomely by Billy Bob Thorton -threatens to coast down the mult-racial church. The scene ends with Thorton’s exclusionary character on his knees in deep remorse and weeping for forgiveness. It’s a heavenly thing to gape.

This film is ruggedly just and will construct the pious and self-righteous crowd cringe with prudent dissaproval. But hey, those of you who are in touch with reality will probably cherish this film. I’m a preacher’s kid and I know an unprejudiced attempt when I search for one. This is it. Appreciate!

At present there are various ethnic groups that comprise the demographic, such as Americans, Koreans, Chinese, Japanese, Indians, Indonesians, Malaysians, Australians, Germans, Italians, and other nationals from Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

Davao city is dominated by the Christian population and more than 80% of them practice the Roman Catholic faith. A few born again groups founded in the city have gained world wide prominence.

My kids adore these, but I really didn’t need second copies!!!

Both my nine year venerable daughter and my seven year venerable daughter adore this DVD. The only complaint I have about it is that I had no conception how to play both movies until my older daughter turned the DVD upside down and inserted it into the player and then the other movie worked! I don’t assume I would ever have figured that one out.
